What is a Bonded Warehouse?
A Bonded warehouse refers to any place where imported goods can be stored or undergo manufacturing operations without having to pay the necessary duties on them until they are entered into general circulation. In the UK, these locations must be approved by HMRC and allow the suspension of excise duty and customs duty payments providing a massive help in cashflow for companies that take advantage of it.
Eligibity Criteria
To be eligible for customs bonded warehousing, your goods must be imported from a foreign customs territory, remain under customs control and be liable to customs duties and/or import VAT. Once products are delivered to the warehouse, both the importer and warehouse owner become liable for the goods under a bond. This liability is only cancelled when the goods are exported, destroyed or sold to local markets after payment of duties. The Bonded Warehousekeepers Association (BWA) have come a long way from their humble beginnings dating back to their first meeting at the Steels Hotel in Glasgow way back in May 1885 when membership was priced at 1 guinea. In the 138 years that have followed, the group have grown to nearly 100 members up and down the country with just Whyte & Mackey the last surviving business from the very start.
Containing a Board of Directors lined with industry experts and former HMRC compliance staff, the opportunity for knowledge and insights sharing that comes from our membership with the BWA is second to none. The BWA team has proved invaluable during our application to gain Excise approval on our West Midlands warehouse site which was successfully granted by HMRC towards the end of 2023.
